The Science of Reading is a large, interdisciplinary body of scientifically-based research about reading, which has been conducted over the past five decades. Using this research, we can learn how proficient reading and writing develops, why some students struggle, and how we can provide the most effective instruction to support all learners. In this series we will explore what effective research-based instruction looks like in the middle and senior classes.
Science of Writing in the Middle and Senior Classes: Writing   Register
February 19th  7pm

In our third session we will explore what research tells us about effective writing instruction. Through exploration of The Writing Rope, we will consider how writing can be developed across all curricular areas. Practical guidance will be given to meaningfully integrate writing into reading lessons.

Science of Reading in the Middle and Senior Classes: Spelling   Register
February 26th  7pm

Our final session considers what research has to tell us about spelling instruction in the middle and senior class. Assessment screeners will be explored to identify starting points for instruction. Participants will learn how to interpret screener data and provide differentiated instruction accordingly. Practical guidance will be given for whole class and differentiated instruction.
