“It’s in the application that the learning sticks.” - Wiley Blevins
Phonics instruction can fail if there is not enough application to reading and writing. It is important that children are given enough opportunities to practise decoding and read connected text on a daily basis.
Deirdre will examine the place of decodable readers in the junior classes, and demonstrate activities that allow for the purposeful application of skills and the development of accuracy and automaticity in reading.
Facilitator: Deirdre O'Toole My name is Dee and I am an Irish Primary School teacher. I’ve been teaching since 2005, and a Mammy since 2008. I have worked in three very different schools and have taught most class levels. Songs, stories and playtime are part of our daily routine.
As a teacher and a parent, I am constantly learning. I am passionate about making school a fun learning environment for all. I have particular interests in Play, Music, Picturebooks and STEM; basically, any subject where teacher and children can be creative and have fun. I love to share ideas with other teachers. I am currently studying for a PhD in Literacy Education in Mary Immaculate College, which is tough, but enjoyable!
